Rosia Montana arbitration and structural injustices

Editorial illustration for the article written by IRINA VELICU and IONUȚ CODREANU for the Antropedia - Sfertul Academic platform.

The study examines the arbitration case brought by the mining company Gabriel Resources against Romania in 2015 and the “perpetuation of structural injustices.”

🥀 The illustration’s concept balances the parties involved, floating within a collage that highlights, on the one hand, the village of Roșia Montană and the marginalized Roma community, and on the other, the mining company, the gold, the politicians, the excavation site, and the devastation left in its wake. Above it all is a depiction of the eight wealthy white judges presiding over the case, emerging from behind closed doors—a mythological hydra of power imbalance that has been criticized for its lack of transparency.
